Topic: Promotion of Children's Literature and Reading Title of Paper: Nepalese Children's Literature: Past and Present Name of Writer: Biswambhar Ghimire (Chanchal)
Abstract
The history of Nepalese Children's Literature is short. A long and challenging task of promoting this literature lies ahead of us. Nevertheless, within the last five decades or so, children's literature in Nepal has made a big progress. Parents, especially in rural areas, still regard books on children's literature as luxuries since they can very seldom afford it. They are not sufficiently literate to consider the worth of purchasing such books and encouraging their children to read them. This is compounded by the lack of seriousness on the part of urban masses who themselves have yet to create a reading culture for themselves. Among other hindrances are the domination of the formal schooling textbooks, lack of good reading habit in children themselves and, ultimately, low market of children's books. The development of multimedia has also greatly contributed to suppression of reading habits in children. The younger generation prefers the visual culture. However, the future of the children's books in Nepal is bright and promising since more good writers and editors are beginning to emerge. More private schools are promoting the reading habit of children even as parents are beginning to understand the positive effects of reading on their children.

A sock with a hole in it”: how children from Valparaiso write, draw and come to terms with their own reality
A children's magazine, written for and by children from the poorest neighbourhoods of Valparaiso , Chile 's once great port, opens doors into literacy for its writers and its readers.
The authors, a group of about 40 children from three to 13 years old, have formed a team over a period of five years, through informal workshops and reading groups, and since 2006 have been publishing their work in a twice-yearly magazine, called Calcetin con papa , “A sock with a hole”. “My neighbourhood”, “Listen to me!” “Music at full blast” horror stories, jokes, recipes, puzzles, and book reviews of best-loved books are some of the topics on which they write. In “Messages” and “Letters” they sometimes bare their hearts: “I wish my Dad would stop hitting me” “I wish my Mum was home”. Workshops held in local schools use the magazine as a starting point to stimulate debate and inspire new young writers to collaborate in future issues. Through their writing, the children acquire the confidence to raise their voices and express their views. Through the magazine they can now hope to be heard by the adult world, first parents and teachers, then a wider circle of adult authorities. Centro Chileno Nórdico de Literatura Infantil. Experiences of a Turkish publishing house: Narrating history to children through stories
Herodotus of Halicarnassus (today´s Bodrum , Turkey ) - regarded as the “father of history” – had written his inquiries in the form of stories. Althoug history is based on stories, it differs from them in terms of objectivity. Written from a nation´s point of view, history cannot be objective, but based on facts nevertheless. Stories, however, are written without any concern regarding objectivity. Thus ‘historiy in stories' becomes a crucial tool in introducing the past to children, because they are more interested in stories than facts. The day they start listening to fairy tales, children encounter history without noticing. They accept it willingly and even aske for more. But when they meet history as a subject in school and it becomes obligatory, their reaction may be quite different. Children are more interested in “now” and “tomorrow” making it difficult to tell them about “yesterday” – even if “yesterday” is the basis for today´s living conditions. This gap between children and history can only be bridged by genuinely narrated and attentively edited stories. With experience derived from a rich cultural history and a belief in expert editorship, Gunisigi Kitapligi has published widely read books. Its efforts in bringing history into children´s lives have set a remarkable example for the publishing world.
Born in 1982 in Ankara . She studied advertising in Marmara University , Faculty of Communications. She worked as a copywriter and translator for two years. In 2005 she started working as editor's assistant in Günisigi Kitapligi , Turkey 's expert children and young adult books publisher. She participated in editorial process of nearly 50 books, selected from Turkish and world literature. Nowadays she is translating a four book series of chlidren books for Günisigi Kitapligi, participates in both national and international events of publishing and contributes to the theoretical framework of the publishing process. |
