Presentation Title: Outsiders in Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales
Abstract: According to Maria Tatar, Hans Christian Andersen's stories have “engaged generations of children and adults alike with their melodramatic depictions of desire, loss, and self immolation” (1999, p.216). Furthermore, she remarks that the stories usually have characters who endure “silent suffering” (p. 214). And of course, for the most part such characters end up dying, tragically embracing a better life in the spiritual world.
In my presentation, I want to take the argument further by demonstrating that the characters in these stories, especially in “The Little Mermaid,” and “The Steadfast Tin Soldier,” are already marginalized within their respective communities by their circumstances. They must then seek ways to cope with this reality as they endure the pain that goes hand-in-hand with being an outsider. Thus the little mermaid and the tin soldier, as courageous as they are, remain on the margin because of their physical disabilities. While the little mermaid's disability is self-imposed, and the tin soldier's is as a result of the manufacturing company, they both struggle to belong.
I will identify specific strategies used by these characters to cope with their reality, as I demonstrate that the strategies are employed in a desperate quest to belong. Therefore, group identity becomes something that both characters seek consciously as they wrestle with disability issues.

Hans Christian Andersen in Puppet Theatre
Indeed, two centuries after his birth, Andersen's wonderful stories have never ceased to touch children's hearts. The magic of puppet theatre is a powerful mediator in this process, for the puppet stage is an intersection of literature, living word, fine art, music and dance which provides vast opportunities for the cultivation of human values. A place, where children can see their favourite literary characters “in flesh and blood.” And the question is how to transform the literary world into a theatrical one, so that the miracle really happens.

A new ancient story The traditional stories are more and more present, but up dated. There are movies, advertisement, literature books and many other things passing through a remake and are viewed from a different perspective. So, to present a proposal of teaching literature using intertextual relations, is the intention of this research. The Ugly Duckling written by Hans Christian Andersen, was read in counterpoint with two contemporary Brazilian narratives: Flicts, of Ziraldo and Gilt, of André Carvalho. These works are related because of the common theme (the different being and it sweats acceptance in the group), but what differentiates them, can be revealed by the reading of contrast, which, contrasting aspects like characters (passive / active in front of the impasse of the exclusion produced by the different one) and endings (discovering or not their space in order to live their differences), is what justifies the importance of works of this nature.

Theme:A brazilian travel around Hans Chrisitan Andersen's life and workIn the year of Hans Christian Andersen 200 th birthday, the PROLIJ, a research programm of UNIVILLE organised an event marathon in April to pay homage to the worlwide children literature father. The event was especially made to discuss Andersen as a writter as well as a man, that influenced thousands of generations all over the globe. To start a performance of his stories, after that a historical prospect of the children literature and to finish his commented biografy were presented. To illustrate PROLIJ's intentions regarding the divulgation and the creative exploitation of his work with the brazilian children we presented a contrast reading of The Ugly Duckling and its contemporary retellings, pointing out other similar possibilities. At the end we opened a reflexion moment, when was possible to notice that the audience was charmed by the tales, life and history of a man who's stories are still alive in the children's imaginary.

Talker: Janice MatteiTheme: Thumbelina – Hans Christian Andersen Talk: Approaching university and children education is very important to promote the reading habit and to understand the importance of children Literature during the first years of school. Our proposal is to analyse the relationship between children and the literary work Thumbelina written by Hans Christian Andersen, to find out how the characters and the conflicts of this story live in the imaginary of a group of five year-old children. The analysis will be accomplished by a group of pedagogy students using the results obtained by a pre-school teacher after telling the story, dramatizing it, interpreting it using arts and collecting the chilren's comments. They will also do a resarch on the importance of reading in the early years and how it is related to the children at their scholarity initiation.

Topic: The Collateral Damages of War: Radical Transformations of H. C. Andersen's The Little Match Girl in Contemporary Children's Literature
Jina Kalogirou Associate Professor of Literature Teaching National and Kapodistrian University of Athens , Greece
Sofia Paraschou , MA and Phd on Children's Literature, author of books for children.
Abstract
It is certainly true that the magnificent tales of H. C. Andersen, with their fine perception of life's ironies, have had a pervasive influence on the contemporary children's literature of the world. Many well known contemporary writers or artists (Ungerer, Lemoin, Boulotis, Trivizas, Aranitsis etc.) break, shift or debunk the traditional motifs of Andersen's tale The Little Match Girl by showing how a different aesthetic and social setting relativises or even subverts all the values of this famous tale. In their dialogue with Andersen, the contemporary writers/artists are conversing with history and with the present-day disasters of war, and not only with the despairing discourse which emanates from the tale of the great Danish author. To the horror which we have lived through (seeing innocent children in war, bombings, sieges, impoverishment etc.), other horrors will be added, and constantly are being added, drowning the palimpsest of our saturated memory.
